Dear God (Quarx), thanks for all your trouble to bring CM7 to us

Now that we have a thread with 300+ pages, it's a little difficult to find information about common problems and mistakes. This thread if for this purpose; I will try to update as Quarx update the original CM7 post.

** Always start the procedures with 70% - full charge (don't worry if your battery die during the process, you can still go mcgyver =)
** Make a backup of your apk's, There's a lot of programs to do that (File Explorer, AndroZip, AppMonster, etc.). If you want to backup your configurations too, use Titanium Backup.

Recomended software versions:
- Bootmenu 0.6.1 or Defy 2ndinit 1.4
- SBF 3.4.2-177 (nordic) or 3.4.3-11 (uk)
- RSD Lite 4.9
- SuperOneClick 2.1
- Clockworkmod Recovery 2.5.1.8

1) What SBF version to use when flashing CM7?
- I'm using 3.4.2-177 Nordic, Quarx itself uses 3.4.3-11 UK, but you can use any Froyo leak of your choice. I really recommend one of these two.

2) How to install CM7 Beta 6?
- First flash any Froyo leak of your choice (see 1)
- Turn USB Debugging ON
- Root via SuperOneClick
- Reboot
- Install 2nd Init Recovery Installer 1.4 (For a safe install, use 1.4 or bootmenu 0.6.1) (see 10)
- Turn USB Debugging OFF
- Reboot your device 2 times
- Copy CM7 Beta 6, Google Apps 2.3.4 (market, gtalk, etc.), FixBrightness.zip and Battery_step.zip to your SD Card
- Reboot your device, when the blue led lights at Motorola logo, press Volume Down to enter Bootmenu
- Go to "Set Default Bootmode" then select [2ND-INIT]
- Go to "[Custom Recovery] start"
- Select "wipe cache partition" then "wipe data/factory reset"
- Select "install zip from sdcard", "choose zip from sdcard", then select "update-cm-7.1.0-jordan-beta6-signed"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard", then select "gapps-gb-20110503-signed.zip"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard", then select "FixBrightness.zip"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard", then select "Battery_step.zip"
- Select "+++++Go Back++++++" then "reboot your system now"
Now wait and CM7 will be loaded.

3) How to update from previous versions?
- Copy Fix.zip (only needed for beta 4.1 or older), CM7 Beta 6, Google Apps 2.3.4, FixBrightness.zip and Battery_step.zip to your SD Card.
- Reboot your Defy then go to Bootmenu (blue light at Motorola logo) then Custom Recovery
- There's no need to wipe data/cache!
- Select "install zip from sdcard", "choose zip from sdcard", then select "Fix.zip"(only needed for beta 4.1 or older)
- Reboot (only needed for beta 4.1 or older)
- Go back to Bootmenu, then Custom Recovery
- Select "install zip from sdcard", "choose zip from sdcard", then select "update-cm-7.1.0-jordan-beta6-signed"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard", then select "gapps gb 20110503 signed.zip"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard", then select "FixBrightness.zip"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard", then select "Battery_step.zip"
- Select "+++++Go Back++++++" then "reboot your system now"
You will need to delete de folder /data/location to use gps/agps. Do it via Root Explorer, adb or terminal emulator (via terminal ignore the first and the last line):

Code:
adb shell $ su # rm -R /data/location # exit $ exit

4) My market is not downloading/installing any program. What to do?
- Just log in Google Talk. Seriously. If this don't solve your problem, close any service from google and clear the cache from market and gtalk. If the problem persists, you can try to go to Custom Recovery and clear the cache from there, but you will lose any configuration made for all your other programs.

5) Flashed CM7 (or any other ROM) now i'm stuck at Motorola or Cyanogen logo. What to do?
- Go to Custom Recovery then clear cache. If the problem persists, you can try to wipe dalvik cache (in advanced) too. The next boot will take some time to build dalvik cache again. If you don't have Custom Recovery for some reason, power off your phone, press and hold Volume Down + Power to go to Stock Recovery (only to clear cache/wipe data). Use Volume Up + Volume Down to show the options at Stock Recovery.
- If you installed CM7 via bootmenu 0.8.0 this can be the cause. Use bootmenu 0.6.1 or 0.8.3, or install Defy 2ndinit 1.4 or 1.7. You will need to start again, wiping all and flashing the SBF via RSD Lite again.

6) Can I restore my phone to send it to warranty after flashing CM7?
- You can in these two situations
1 - You have a full SBF of your original ROM (for carriers that already released 2.2 is very easy to find one)
2 - You have a nandroid backup AND a fixed SBF of the version you need.
For a list of (fixed) SBF's you can check:
SBF - Service Flash - all files + fixed sbf + Bootloaders
[[sbf:defy]] And Developers

7) How to install CM7 and keep downgrade-ability? (Froyo or Eclair)
If you don't flash the full SBF, your downgrade-ablility is fine.
Here's the safe steps to install CM7 to keep your downgrade-ability:
- Copy nandroid backup of 3.4.2-177 to your sdcard. Uncompress it in the folder clockworkmod/backup/ of your sdcard, create this if needed.
- Turn USB Debug on
- Root via SuperOneClick
- Disable USB Debugging
- Install Custom Recovery
- Reboot
- Go to app System Recovery then install Recovery and Reboot Recovery
- In Custom Recovery, go to "backup and restore", then "Backup". This will take some time, your backup will be at /clockworkmod/backup. Copy it to a safe place.
- Still in recovery, go to "backup and restore", "restore", and select the nandroid backup of 3.4.2-177-005 (not your backup!)
If you have MD5 mismatch error, try to rename the folder of the nandroid to something simple without spaces, like "nand"
- Reboot your system and immediately press and hold Volume Up to enter Bootloader Mode (if you couldn't enter, remove the battery, wait 10s, put it again with Power and Volume Up pressed)
- Flash Fixed SBF of 3.4.2-177 via RSD Lite
Now go to question 2 and do all the process to install CM7.
If you want to go back to your original ROM
- Turn off USB Debuging
- Copy your nandroid backup to sdcard, put it in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup (must be a folder inside backup)
- Reboot phone in Bootmenu (Volume Down when the blue led lights at Motorola logo) then go to Custom Recovery
- Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache (in advanced)
- Choose "backup and restore", "restore", and select your eclair nandroid backup. If your backup doesn't show in this screen, is most likely you placed it in the wrong folder.
- Reboot your system and immediately press and hold Volume Up to enter Bootloader Mode.
6. Flash the Fixed SBF of your original ROM. For a list of (fixed) SBF's you can check:
SBF - Service Flash - all files + fixed sbf + Bootloaders
[[sbf:defy]] And Developers

8) Can't connect to my wireless network.
- Tap and hold the SSID of the network and select Forget

10) How to install Defy 2nd Init?
There's 2 ways to install the bootmenu/2nd init. The easy and the hard
You will need to root your device before these steps.
Easy way: Download it from here, transfer to your Defy via USB, Dropbox or Bluetooth and install via file manager. Just remember to turn off USB Debugging before you reboot, and reboot 2 times before CM7 install.
ALWAYS USE VERSION 1.4 TO INSTALL! OTHER VERSION AND YOU WILL END IN A BOOTLOOP AT M LOGO!
Hard way: To do this you will need adb installed. Follow these steps to install adb (Android Debug Bridge), even if you don't need it now it's a good thing to have. With adb installed, download bootmenu 0.6.1, extract in your sdcard. There will be a folder called "bootmenu". Turn USB Debugging on, then open a Command Prompt (Start => Run => CMD) and type:

Code:
c:\> adb shell $ su # cp -R /sdcard/bootmenu /data/bootmenu # cd /data/bootmenu # chmod 755 * # ./install.sh # cd / # rm -R /data/bootmenu # exit $ exit
Then turn off USB Debugging and reboot your Defy two times.

11) How to install Custom Recovery?
- Root
- Download and install this apk
- Turn off USB Debugging
- Go to Applications -> System Recovery
- Click Install Custom Recovery
- Reboot Recovery to enter Custom Recovery

12) Gmail (or any other software) isn't available on market. How can I install it?
- Download Market Enabler via Market
- Select US Provider
- Open Market and search for Gmail or any other software, it will be available now
- Don't forget to select your correct Baseband in Applications => Defy Baseband Switcher

13) How can I make GPS work better (be more fast and precise)?
- Make a backup of your /etc/gps.conf (use a file manager to rename or copy to another place)
- Visit this thread
- Click in the link "XDA Members Click Here" at the final of the post, and search for the correct .zip for your country
- Copy the .zip to your SD Card and reboot in Bootmenu, then flash the zip via Custom Recovery

14) How can I install swype in CM7?
Method 1:
- Go to http://beta.swype.com, (create a account if needed), download the Swype Beta and install it
- Open Applications -> Swype Installer and follow the instructions on the screen
Method 2 (only for English, Brazilian Portugues, Spanish and French):
