I think it was already mentioned somewhere in the OP, but I could be wrong.
But if you want that back, do this:
Start -> Settings -> System (tab) -> Task Manager -> Button (tab) -> Select 'Enable Quick Menu on Today screen'
Et voila! You have that little button back!
