For those who can't live without kies and who are not comfortable with the terminal, here is a non-terminal fix:
* You need to be rooted first.
* Install SGS Tools by Fr4gg0r from the market
* Copy the attached files to /sdcard/sgstools
* Run it from SGS Tools / Apply Script

Note that each time you reboot the permissions will be reset so you will have to re-run the script before connecting to Kies. If you are concerned about any possible security issues leaving the mtp gadget permissions at 666 then you can run the second script after you have finished with Kies.
