For whatever reason (flashing ROMs, TWRP recovery etc.), every time I followed instructions to boot into download mode, it would immediately go into fastboot thus disallowing me to flash an image with the LG Flash tool.
Discovered this "fix" after flashing TWRP on my replacement G2. Install AutoRec (be sure to use the one for the VS980, it's the last one):
Install TWRP Recovery on LG G2 on Android 4.4.2 KitKat ROM (All Models)
What this does is flash TWRP on a G2 running 4.4.2. However, you'll notice in the sequence of installation is says "Fixing download mode" (or something to that effect) and flashes TWRP. Didn't harm my device already on KK and having TWRP installed, so no worries if you have it flashed.
Now, booting into download mode works just fine and you can use the LG Flash Tool to flash a stock .img if you need to.

Your device didn't boot into download mode because in order to install a custom recovery, you need to downgrade the bootloader to 12B. The laf file (which allows you to access download mode) is still the 24A laf file. Therefore, you needed to replace the 24A laf file with the 12B laf file (which is what autorec does when installing TWRP). Hope this helps you better understand what was done
