Before you head back to best buy, try calling *228 and enter option 2. It only takes a minute and might solve your problem. Of course your phone could be defective anyway but your argument will be stronger if you mention that you tried that.

This helps the phone to find cell towers more effectively. When it does this, it applies less radio power and conserves the battery. If it does it really badly then it consumes so much power that the battery overheats (did you notice the back of the phone was warm during these crashes?) . The overheating can cause a crash as the phone protects itself. The problem is common to CDMA phones on Verizon.

It often fixes the problem. There are other reasons for phones crashing but this is a very common one and entering *228 then option 2 often fixes crash problems on this and other phones."

I'm sorry, but that entire post is completely wrong. *228 purely updates the location of towers to your device, and will only dictate what towers it will connect to while traveling outside of your HSA (Home Service Area). There are several settings in the Verizon Wireless CDMA switch, governing how capable your device is in TSA (Traveling Service Area) and HSA, and even RSA (Roaming Service Area), and the PRL will only affect connections when connecting in a RSA or TSA. Regardless, this will not affect the power your device radio is using. If you are having device power issues, you need to wipe the device back to factory settings via settings > privacy > factory data reset. If this doesn't fix it, it is a device hardware issue, and VZW Technical Support will replace the device for free as long as it is still within the 1 year warranty. If you are within the first 30 days of owning the device, you can swap it out for a brand new phone in the store though. Updating the PRL won't affect those kinds of issues at all; it will only affect your service when leaving your home area. Fun fact though: *228 option 1 includes both option 1 and option 2 in it.
