Para otros modelos de Xiaomi existen trucos para habilitar bandas de frecuencias que según la versión del móvil fueron desactivadas.
Por ejemplo para el Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X en varios foros extranjeros dice esto:
Activation of Carrier Aggregation / LTE-A / 4G + Redmi Note 4 / 4x Qualcomm (MIDO) + activation of all bands, including B20 LTE
1. Download QPST & Qualcomm driver.
2. Make a QCN backup (instructions on the link above) via QPST Software Download ( tab Backup)

3. Download 2 files QCN Attached filev1_beta_unlock.rar (1018 bytes)

First flash the first file and reload, then the second file and reload again.
4. Before flashing QCN files, check "Allow ESN Mismatch" in QPST.
For phones with root, download and install "Network Signal Guru". After installation in the menu, click "Clear Forcings".
To activate the engineering mode, you need to execute through the terminal or via adb the following line:
su
setprop sys.usb.config diag
in miu
through the phone execute * # * # 717717 # *
Connect the USB connector, after which the necessary drivers must be installed.
Supongo que habrá algún modo similar de activar bandas en el Mi8 aunque aún no se ha publicado.
