rom Unofficial Firefox OS

Last month we introduced Firefox OS, a lightweight alternative to Android. We also talked about copyright issues concerning the Firefox OS brand and our solution to keep (nearly) everyone happy.

We promised to release builds of Firefox OS for Xperia devices this month, so for the impatient go here to download: Firefox OS Nightly.

If you’re still reading, great! There’s still lots to tell you.

We’re currently building Mozilla’s master branches. This is where new features are under active development and things are often broken and buggy. (In fact just a few days ago a bug caused all builds to get stuck in a bootloop and were useless…)

However we won’t just be releasing buggy nightly builds. Every few months Mozilla forks the master branch to create the next stable version of Firefox OS. The next fork will be for version v2.5, so from the time of the fork we’ll start releasing two sets of builds; nightly based on master and beta based on v2.5 branches.

Eventually we’ll follow the whole developement process and end with a final stable build of Firefox OS for each version as it is released.

Not just a pretty face
Anyone is welcome to try out our builds (please do!) but Mozilla chose to port Xperia devices for a specific reason; they can be used as a tool for development. If you’re developing a webapp, our builds can be an easy way to test it on Firefox OS without trying to obtain an actual Firefox OS device.

I should also mention that Firefox OS has also solved one of AOSP’s biggest problems: Updates.

AOSP does not have an easy update process. It’s simply not written into the open source project. Firefox (the browser) already has a robust update mechanism, and the OS takes full advantage of it.

Put simply: Firefox OS regularly checks a URL for an XML file, which can contain details of any available updates. Therefore not only are we releasing builds, we’re also enabling OTA updates on all devices.

If you keep Firefox OS on a device for testing purposes, you’ll automatically get updates pushed straight to you every week. We’ll also update the releases for download as and when something interesting is merged into Sony’s AOSP repos.

In fact by the time you read this there may already be an OTA update available.

So, on which devices can I install this?
The initial roll out is for:

Xperia Z3 (leo)
Xperia Z3 Compact (aries)
Xperia Z2 (sirius)
Xperia T2 Ultra (tianchi)
Xperia E3 (flamingo)
Mozilla developers use leo and aries devices themselves, while FXP has ported sirius, tianchi, and flamingo. More devices are definitely on the way.

Just remember, don’t be surprised when you don’t see the Firefox OS branding!
